Darkness

Log, 31st October 3070.

In a small galaxy, some million light years away from anything known, a different kind of life started to develop a long time ago. Little is known about the bases for that life form. There are certain interesting things about the evolution of that kind of life. First of all, the species do not need the light of a start to keep their existance. Secondly, they are not made out of any matter at all (whatsoever). In addition, communication is through magnetic impulses through the ether; they have no planet, no gravity centre or any other external force that would keep them together at one point. They are floating about without a course to follow. Finally, and the most surprising aspect, they seem to own a sort of unknown intelligence. At least, this is true of some specimens I’ve managed to catch, thanks to the equipment set on this ship. I have been studying them for quite some time now and I have been able to get a good deal of information about them. The terms I will now employ in their description are non-scientific since anything known in science up to 2050, the year of our departure from the Earth is of no use to me in making a picture of them and even to understand certain facts properly.

At first sight, they appear to be an empty hole, similar to the appearance of a black hole. Everything disappears inside them. They can generate, apparently, some kind of magnetic energy with the purpose of communication only; though they look as if they were not very gregarious individuals. The production of magnetic energy is done on still unidentified resources so far; but anything that comes inside the range of these creatures is disintegrated; leaving no remains of the subject matter. I say that this is a kind of life because they have quite an autonomous way of behaving, out of the physics and universal rules of movement. They can move easily and avoid certain obstacles I put on their way.

The last few days have been really exciting. Until very recently, I’ve managed to keep them safely inside a special restricted area. Now they appear to have improved their defense mechanisms, so to speak, and have been able to make it out of their confinement.

I regret to inform that by now most of the crew has been devoured into the unknown darkness of their cores. Those things absorb anything that gets on their way and make it disappear at once. I have locked myself up in a quite safe deck of the ship, but I don’t think we will make it through. I am positive about them finding a way of finishing with us all.

I realize I don’t have much time left, so I am telling you. BE CAREFUL! These creatures are extremely hazardous and can bring any life form in the universe to an end. They have already assimilated the data stored in our computer system. They must know of our planet and civilization. Maybe I have underestimated their potential, but if you are not to take any actions to prevent a catastrophe, our planet and culture will be completely destroyed and the human race will perish along with everything that we cherish. Only a piece of darkness drifting away will remain.

31st October 5090.

The starship belonging to BT Co., a ghost ship, with no crew on it, enters terrestrial atmosphere. It’s been said that they have failed to complete their mission: searching for extraterrestrial life form.

We can see that its interior is black as coal, and little by little, the cask of the entire ship begins to disappear, as happens then with the rest of the sky, and of the solar system.
